Ebates Paid For My Thanksgiving!

If you're not familiar with Ebates then this article is for you! First let me explain what Ebates is, then I'll tell you how they paid for my Thanksgiving! Ebates is an online shopping site that if you use their link before making a purchase you earn cash back! The amount varies from store to store and not every store you love to shop at will participate. Ebates also finds you promo codes that might be available saving you even more money on your purchase. You can visit Ebates website and search for a store you plan to do some online shopping with, just click the link for that store and you are on your way to earning cash back. You can also get the Ebates button and it reminds you to use the link automatically when you visit online retailers. This feature saves me a ton of money since I can't always remember to use their links before visiting a store online. Ebates pays out quarterly, so purchases I made from July first through September 30th make up my 'Big Fat Check' payment. The money that I earned from that period was estimated to be paid on November 15 but it actually came on November 7. If you don't earn the required ten dollars to get your payment it will roll over to the next quarter until you've reached that amount. As you can see from the above photo I'm already at $12.63 for this quarter, so I will qualify for my next payment! You can also see that since I first joined I've earned a total of just over $106, not too shabby for just clicking a link and buying things I was going to buy anyway!

Now let's get to how Ebates paid for my Thanksgiving this year. As I mentioned above the money I earned for the 'summer' quarter was paid out to me the first week of November. That 'Big Fat check' payment was $60.14! I will say that part of the reason my earnings were so high this quarter was that we did a remodel and had to buy a new refrigerator and stove and a few portable air conditioners. I made that purchase through Lowe's online with the Ebates link and just like that earned my cash back! The money comes via PayPal and I did some online shopping with mine. I went to Target and got a lot of my essentials like the makings for green bean casserole, boxed stuffing and the cranberry sauce all with free shipping and great prices. I spent a total of $31 with Target on those essentials leaving me with about $29 left in my PayPal account. In case you didn't know you can get a PayPal card which will allow you to spend your PayPal money anywhere. So I used my card and took it to my local supermarket and shopped the sales. I scored my turkey, two pies and a few other needed items all for $27! So basically Ebates paid for my Thanksgiving!

It's free and easy to sign up for Ebates and if you haven't done it yet now is the perfect time. It's almost Black Friday and I'm sure tons of online retailers will be offering amazing deals. Using Ebates not only gives you cash back on purchases you were going to make anyway, it also helps save you the most money! Wanna know what's even better? If you sign up now you can earn $10! Simply click this link and start shopping! It's that easy! If you already are a Ebates member I'd love to hear how much you've earned by shopping with them, just leave me comment! Happy Shopping...and Saving!

How To Make The Perfect Thanksgiving Turkey

Thanksgiving is pretty special to me because my daughter was born the day before Thanksgiving and her first birthday fell on the holiday. That year I decided to cook for the family as a way to celebrate my daughter's special day. Cooking your first Thanksgiving dinner for twenty or so people could be pretty intimidating but I had an ace up my sleeve. My husbands grandma! She came over early that morning and taught me how to prepare and cook my turkey. I've followed her steps ever since and haven't ever had a bad bird yet. Not everyone might know how to handle the turkey so I thought I'd share my preparations with you. I generally cook a twenty plus pound bird but this year I only got a seventeen pound-er, the biggest my local store had. These directions will work for any size bird though, and whether you are using grandmas old roasting pan like me or those aluminum pans, either way I've got you covered!

The first thing you will need to know is if you plan to use a frozen or fresh turkey. If you buy frozen it's handy because you buy ahead of time and keep frozen. You'll have to allow enough time for the turkey to thaw in the refrigerator, never thaw the turkey on the kitchen counter. How long it needs to thaw obviously depends on the size of the bird. Since I'm feeding a crowd and have a big turkey every year I always take mine out a week ahead of time, so tomorrow will be the day mine moves from the freezer to the fridge.

Great, so now it's Thanksgiving morning and you need to get that turkey ready to go in the oven. Here's the first step-Take the turkey out of the fridge and put in your clean kitchen sink, you'll need to clean it again when you're done with this step. Next, get some kitchen scissors and cut open the packaging around the turkey. Doing this in the sink makes clean-up easier. The turkey has two cavities and you'll need to remove the neck and gizzards from the cavity. Place those items in the bottom of your roasting pan, they give the gravy you'll make later good flavor. Once you've done that give the turkey a rinse and then pat dry. Take a hand-full of salt and rub the inside cavity of the bird. Go ahead and transfer the turkey from the sink to the pan at this point. Now take a stick of butter (I use real butter not margarine but use what you have) and rub all over the bird, rubbing it into the skin. Place some butter on the inside of the cavity and under the skin. Once you've used up the butter you can add a bit of water or broth to the bottom of the pan. Keep in mind that the turkey will produce it's own juices as well, so you won't want to put too much liquid in the bottom. If you are stuffing the bird you can go ahead and do it at this point.

Now you're ready to put it in the oven, you'll cook the turkey according to the temperature on the package. The most important part of the cooking of the turkey is the basting! I baste my turkey every fifteen minutes. I set a timer if I'm doing too many things at once so I remember. There is nothing worse than a dry turkey. Also, cover the turkey! I have a covered roasting pan but if you don't own or can't borrow one then go ahead and make a tin foil tent to cover the turkey. Most turkey's these days have the pop-up timer that will let you know when the bird is done, I've never had one lie to me! So it's very easy to know when your bird is done. Sometimes it's done before I expected it to be. When that happens don't panic. All you have to do is keep the oven as low as it can be and keep basting it. You can remove the lid if you need to brown the turkey up a little, it doesn't always get golden brown with the lid.

Cooking Thanksgiving dinner for any size crowd can be a little scary but relax! Enjoy the preparations as much as you enjoy the food and time with your family. There is nothing more important than family and getting together to share a wonderful meal! If you have any additional questions or need any Thanksgiving advice feel free to ask! Happy Cooking!

Made In America Christmas - Part Two

Christmas is sneaking closer and closer and what I'd love is if everyone would commit to buying at least one item that is made in the USA. If you missed the first post about this you can check it out here. There are so many great companies that make products right here at home, in the weeks leading up to Christmas I'm going to share some of them with you. You'll be sure to find something for everyone on your list and without having to spend a fortune. Common belief is that products made in America cost more but that's not always the case.

Today we are focusing on a product that any gal who loves makeup will appreciate. That company is Beauty Blender! From what I could gather from their website, Beauty Blender was created by a make-up artist by the name of Rea Ann Silva in 2014. The beauty blender is an egg shaped sponge that you use to apply your make-up. This brand is going to make any girl happy from pre-teen to adult. You can visit their website and check out all their products, including their holiday gift guide by clicking here. I noticed they were offering free shipping on all orders, so now would be a great time to shop! You can also find the Beauty Blender in-stores at Sephora. What I like about the original Beauty Blender brand is they are made in the USA and are latex free.

If you know of any great companies that sell products made here in the USA feel free to leave a comment. I'm always looking for new great products made here. Check back soon for part three of Made in America Christmas where I'll be featuring a company sure to please any guy in your life! I hope everyone can commit to buying at least one item Made in the USA this Christmas!

Wal-Mart Raising Online Prices

Online shopping has become a very important part of my life. I live in a small town that doesn't have very many stores to choose from. I also do a lot of stuff online where I earn PayPal or Amazon money that I want to spend online. Whatever your reasons are, shopping online has become an important part of our lives. Many stores offer deals on shipping so it can actually save you time and money.

Last week I had sixty dollars in my PayPal account from Ebates (look for another post about this) and I was looking to shop for some Thanksgiving basics online. I headed over to Walmart.com because I know they have good shipping deals and low prices. I was shocked to find that their prices were higher than I expected. What made it worse was they gave an online price and then a cheaper 'in-store' price. Obviously I wasn't going to pay more to shop online and I certainly wasn't driving all the way to Wal-Mart in the next town over. So what did I do? I headed over to Target.com who actually was having a great sale. I stocked up on lots of my basics for Thanksgiving like poultry seasoning, cranberry sauce, mini marshmallows and more. Target was having a deal where if you spent $25 you got free shipping. I ended up spending $31 and the best part was UPS brought my package the next evening. I was really surprised how quickly it came! Also when I compared the prices from Target to my local supermarket's holiday sales, I still saved money!

This morning as I was watching the news, a segment came up about how Wal-Mart is charging more on certain food and home items online to try and drum up more in-store business. Well I'm sorry to tell you Wal-Mart but I'm not paying more to shop online and I'm not going to head over to a store to save either. What I'll continue to do is price shop online to find the best prices or just shop at my own local store in person. I sure hope Wal-Mart takes a second look at this idea because it seems kinda silly to me. Online shopping makes up a huge portion of business for stores and some of us really like to shop from home in our pj's!

Would you pay more to shop online?

Made In America Christmas - Part One

Christmas is coming right around the corner and we'll soon be doing all of our shopping. I want to challenge all of us American's to have a Made In America Christmas this year! I think it would be great if we found and bought at least one item for someone on our list that was made right here in the USA. I'll be doing a series of posts leading up to Christmas featuring brands that are made in the USA!

The first of the companies that I think will make great Made In America gifts is Tervis! They make insulated and stainless steel tumblers mugs and even wine glasses! They were founded in Detroit in 1946 and then the company was sold and moved to Florida in 1960. What I like about Tervis tumblers is they have a style for anyone. You could literally find a cup for mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle and even the kids. You can also customize them, which always makes a gift a little more special. Tervis also stands behind the quality of their products offering a lifetime guarantee. Click here to check out all their products.

Tervis is just one of the many brands out there who make quality products made here in America. There are tons of websites featuring brands that are fully or partially made here. Be on the look out for my next post featuring great made in America gifts for Christmas. Let's all have a Made in America Christmas this year!

If you know of a great made in America product feel free to leave a comment about it. **I have no affiliation with Tervis or any of the companies and I'm going to feature.

November Fishing In Cedar Key

As the weather gets a little cooler in Florida the fishing starts to turn on! We went out a few times over the last weekend, fishing the low tide in-shore. My husband and I walked out with our mud boots on a mud flat and fished the deeper water off the flat. The Redfish were on fire! We caught a few spotted sea trout as well. We were using live mud minnows that we caught as bait.

I caught my biggest Redfish to date, outdoing my previous Cedar Key Red. This guy was too big to take home for dinner and was put back in the Gulf of Mexico to get a little bigger. My husband also caught a few over-sized Reds that also went back into the water.

Even if the fish aren't biting it's still not a bad day when you are surrounded by Florida's natural beauty. Getting out at low tide and seeing the bird's feeding, mullet jumping and checking out the critters from the water is my idea of a great day. Add a few nice fish and it's heaven! So get out there and cast a line, the fishing is turning on!

Re-Purpose A Dining Room Table

I had a dining room table problem in that I had too many! When I first moved into my rental house two years ago I didn't have any table. Eventually my dad gave me a round table that had belonged to my grandparents. It wasn't anything special but it worked. Then one day we were all out at yard sales and we found a great wooden square table with two benches. It was only $40! Not too long after that my husband's Aunt was moving and gifted us with her dining room table that I absolutely loved. Then my father in law got sick and moved in with us. He gave us his house because he couldn't keep up with it anymore and it needed a lot of work. So my husband and I spent all Summer fixing it up.

Guess what was in that house? Yep, you guessed it..another table! This one was special though, because it was solid wood and had been around the whole twenty one years that I've been with my husband. I also had seen the same table in family photos of my husband when he was young. So I didn't want to just get rid of it. There was a spot in the house between the washer and dryer and the pantry. It was the perfect fit for half the table! So we took the table apart, painted half of it and then attached it to the wall. It's going to serve as my desk/folding clothes area. I can pay bills there, look up recipes, plan grocery lists etc. I am hanging a frame around a cork board so I can attach my bills that are due, memories, recipes, invitations or anything else! We are going to take the other half of the table turn it into a TV stand. It was a great way to re-purpose a beloved item in a different way.

Bahia Honda State Park, Florida Keys

This weekend we took a trip down to the Florida Keys. If you have never been it's really worth the trip. We stayed in Key Largo but on Saturday we went to Bahia Honda State Park which is in the middle keys.

This park was voted best beach back in the 1990's and I can totally see why. The water was clear and warm, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. I was able to see lots of coral pieces, fish and even a crab while snorkeling around. Bahia Honda state park has a couple of beaches both on the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean side. There is lots to do here as well, you can camp, hike, swim, fish, even launch a boat or kayak from the marina there. The cost to get in was only $9 (that doesn't include camping fees).

The Florida Keys are beautiful but not all of their beaches are the same. Some are really rocky since a lot of the coast is made up of coral reef. The beach here at Bahia Honda is sandy and very nice to walk on. If you weren't impressed with some of the other beaches in the Florida keys then come visit here!

I thought this was the perfect place for families too because the surf was calm and the water was clear and mostly shallow. They have a gift shop and a concession stand selling things like subs and pizza to candy and snorkel gear. I've been to a lot of Florida's state parks and Bahia Honda is my new favorite place! Next time we visit we plan to camp here so we can see more of the park!

You really don't have to leave the country to find beautiful tropical beaches with clear blue water. They are right here in Florida and the Florida Keys. Come down and enjoy the food, water and people!

Research Your Family Tree For Free

There was a time if you wanted to search for any information about your family members you'd have to pay to be a member of a genealogy site. Now there is a ton of information available online for free, you just need to know where to look. The picture above is one of my Great X9 Grandmother, she settled in the area known as Sewell Point, now Norfolk Naval Base. She married Henry Sewell Sr. who came from England around 1630 or so. If you Google 'Sewell Point Virginia' you'll see a Willoughby Bay, both are named after my descendants. Pretty Cool!

The first place I like to do any searches is Family Search ,it's a free website run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. You can search all types of records and also create a free account and make your own family tree. What I love most about this site is the fan chart they have, it makes it really easy to see everyone in your family. Keep in mind you will need a bit of information about your relatives, mainly names and birthdays. The more information you have the more successful you'll be. Another thing to consider is there are many people with the same name, so knowing any family names, like the name of the spouse or siblings, even the location will help you narrow down your searches. Last names were often spelled different and sometimes I've seen middle names used on a Census record which can make searching harder. Also when recording this information things can be heard wrong, in my searching for my great grandma I've see her name appear as Sophie, Sophia and Silva, so try searching different names if you can't find anything on your first try. Last names are another tricky thing in dealing with ancestry, often times the spelling has changed over the years.

Another site I like to use is Find A Grave. Just click on the link "Search 162 million grave records" to begin searching for your family members. Sometimes you can get lucky here and find other relatives by finding one match. For instance there might be a link to a spouse or child, which can give you more information than you might have had. It also gives you accurate birth and death dates, which you can take back to the Family Search site to try and match up more information. The neat thing about Find a Grave is you can leave virtual flowers for your loved ones along with a little note.

I also like to search old newspaper records. There are some sites out there that you have to pay to be a member of but I don't like to do that. If I end up finding a newspaper that does contain some family information but I'd have to pay for it, I try searching the name of the newspaper and the date to see if online records are available. I've had a lot of luck that way. It's a little more work then paying for a membership but if you keep at it you're pretty sure to find it online for free.

One final neat tip is about the Census records. Sometimes at the top of the page it will have the street name of the records being taken, other times this is written down the left hand side. Some records also have a house number listed, if you get lucky you can get the street and house number and actually see where your relatives lived, providing the house is still there. The handwriting can be a bit tricky, what I thought was Marker or Market street was actually Maher street. The Census records always have the towns name listed so even if you can't quite make out the street name you can get close enough to check a map. I hope with these few tips you can easily find some information about your family tree! If you have any questions or get stuck I'd be happy to help, just leave a comment. Good luck searching!

Mystery & History In A Yard Sale Find - Part Two

I bought a few old books at a yard sale and found some interesting drawings inside. This is the second part of this story, who was F. Norton Hatch.

After I got the books home and found the drawings I was very interested in what happened to the artist. I was very impressed with the drawings and just assumed that F. Norton Hatch was an artist somewhere. So I began searching for him that way. However nothing was coming up. In the other book without drawings his mother had addressed him as 'Captain', that paired with the nautical drawings led me to believe maybe he grew up and enlisted in the Navy. So my next step was to search and see if I could find any record of F. Norton Hatch being enlisted. Again I came up empty handed.

Since I couldn't find any history of this person being an artist or having any kind of link to ships I decided to turn my search in a different direction. I then began to search for any kind record I could match to him and sadly I came up with something.

F. Norton Hatch was Frank Norton Hatch. His tombstone reads that he is the only son of Emily Norton Hatch and William E Hatch and that he died in July of 1900 at the age of sixteen years old. The drawing in the book I have was dated April 1900, Frank didn't grow up to be an artist because tragically he passed away at a young age. I wanted to know more though. I was so interested in this boy and his family. His tombstone is actually a shared tombstone of his mother's family. From that I was able to see, his mother had passed away in 1898, a year after she gave him the book with the inscription.
The father wasn't buried in the same cemetery and I didn't have much information to go on but his first name and middle initial. I decided to try searching census records to see if I could find any additional information about his family. Apparently the 1890 Census was mostly destroyed in a fire, so I was at a dead end there. I got lucky with the next census though. The 1900 United States Census was done on June 7, 1900 in Franks area, remember Frank passed on July 16, 1900 very soon after the census was completed. On that 1900 census he was listed as a boarder of the school, but it seems to be listed as a house. It has the headmasters name and family and the same boys names as were listed on the roster of the team sports listed in the back of the book I have. It was a match.
From this census I was able to learn that his father, William E. Hatch was born in Georgia. Every little bit of information was putting me one step closer to piecing this family together. I was able to learn that William E. was William Edwin and he lived until 1923 and was buried up in Maine. His tombstone lovingly memorializes the death of his wife and son, both buried in Connecticut.
Just another piece of the puzzle. Even though I knew that Frank Norton Hatch had died at sixteen, I didn't know where or how he died. Every time I learned a new fact I was able to adjust my searching and find out something new. I kept at it, all with information readily available online without paying to be a member to any genealogy site. Eventually I found what I was looking for.
I found the death record for F. Norton Hatch, Frank died at the young age of sixteen from a skull fracture and meningitis complications. I was also able to see that he died in Portland Maine. It doesn't tell me what happened to him that caused the skull fracture though. I'm assuming since it happened in Maine that he had come home for Summer from the Powder Point School which was located in Duxbury, Massachusetts. I don't know that for a fact though, it could have happened that he got hurt at school and was brought to Portland Maine afterwards. I might never know what actually happened to Frank.

What about those ships he drew, were they actually real ships? Who was Mr. Edward Barry of the Marcellus? What exactly was the Powder Point School? There was still more information that I wanted to know about these drawings in this old book. Stay tuned to part three for more answers.

Mystery & History In A Yard Sale Find - Part One

I am a lover of old things, I love history and I really love a good mystery. One of the things I enjoy picking up at yard sales and flea markets are old books. I like the way they look and use them as decor in my house. So when I found a few old books at a church yard sale I bought them for a dollar a piece. What I thought was just a normal old book that was going to look great sitting on my bookshelf turned into a wonderful surprise and a mystery once I opened the front cover and saw the inscription and drawings.
I've found books with inscriptions before because they were often given as gifts in the past. However, I've never found a book with drawings in them, especially as good as these. On the inside cover was the drawing with various guns and a pennant in the corner with P.P.S. and the year 1900 on it. The book has a published date of 1897 so I knew the drawing was actually from that time. On the first blank page next to the inside cover is the inscription: F. Norton Hatch Powder Point School Duxbury, Massachusetts April Fifth Nineteen Hundred. The drawings and inscriptions didn't stop there though.
Once you turned the page was a very detailed drawing of a ship titled U.S. Converted Yacht Pathfinder. On the top of the page written in smaller print is Mr. Edward Barry U.S.S. Marcellus. I can just imagine this boy, F. Norton Hatch reading this book titled 'The Spy' and drawing and dreaming about ships.
There were still a few more writings and drawings left in this J. Fenimore Cooper book full of mystery. In the back of the book was one last drawing of a ship and the roster of pupils at the Powder Point School and also the members of the Football and Baseball teams for the year of 1899-1900.
The other book, another J. Fenimore Cooper titled 'Red Rover' didn't have any of the wonderful drawings that 'The Spy' had. Although it did have a simple inscription "Captain Norton Hatch' Christmas 1896 From His Mother.
I never imagined when I bought some old books at a yard sale that I would find a story in the book. Who was F. Norton Hatch. Who was Mr. Edward Barry? Is Captain Norton Hatch the same person as F. Norton Hatch. Was the Pathfinder a real ship? What was the Powder Point School? I had a ton of questions and wanted to find out more.

Potato Peeling Clean Up Hack

I peel a lot of potatoes in my house, not to mention all the other stuff I peel! Cleaning up after those peels can be a real pain in the bottom. You could use a bowl but who wants to wash anymore dishes then you have too? I've tried peeling right over the trash can but that never seems to work out very well. I end up picking peels off the floor and that sure isn't saving me any time or aggervation. I have a simple solution for you and it's super easy and you probably already have the solution in your house.
It's a plastic shopping bag! Plastic shopping bags seem to be everywhere. I try and use re-usable bags most of the time but we still end up with a pile of bags. I use them as garbage can liners for the bathrooms and a few other things but this might be my favorite use for them. Just lay the bag out on your counter or in the sink and peel whatever your peeling right over the bag. This makes clean up a breeze, just fold up the edges and carry to the compost bin or the trash can. Couldn't be easier!
Thanks for stopping by Things I Never Learned From My Mom! We'd love to hear any of your favorite tips or ticks to make your life easier!

Devil's Hammock Wildlife Management Area

Devil's Hammock is a wildlife management area located near the town of Bronson, Florida in Levy County. It's over seven thousand acres open to the public for hunting, fishing and exploring. The Wacasassa River and Otter Creek run through Devil's Hammock. I would suggest if you are going to visit to have a four wheel drive vehicle to do your exploring, especially if there has been a lot of rain.
If you want to get out in nature and see the real Florida this is the place to do it. I don't think we even saw another person while we were out and about exploring the back roads through Devil's Hammock. We did see an alligator, a deer, pygmy rattlesnake and lots of birds! I observed lots of beautiful flowers and trees, including tons of cypress knees!
If you plan on hunting you will need a Florida Hunting License and a Wildlife Management Area stamp, however you don't need any kind of permit to hike and explore. If you have a freshwater fishing license you can drop a line in the water. Mostly I just enjoyed driving the Jeep through the back roads and puddles and nature watch.
Bring the four wheel drive and a good pair of shoes and come on out to North Central Florida and explore. If you already live here and have never been it's worth a trip! While you are in the area cool off at Bronson's Blue Springs, a freshwater spring that stays a cool seventy two degrees year round! Get down a back road and explore in your own backyard if you can't make it to Devil's Hammock!

The Canyons Zip Line And Canopy Tours

Have you ever been on a zip line? If the answer to that question was no, then I have the perfect place for you to try it out. The Canyons Zip Line and Canopy Tours, it's located in Ocala, Florida and you can find them on the web. We had some friends give us a gift certificate for the expres tour, which lets you do five of the nine zip lines they have. It was a great way to try out zip lining to see if we liked it. Seriously though, what's not to like. We had an amazing time and can't wait to go back and do it again.
Let me tell you a little about the tour in case you've never been on a zip line before, this was my first time! When you first get there you fill out all the paperwork and then you wait for your tour time. The area is beautiful and the zip lines were built over old limerock pits. When it's time for your tour to start your guides get you all dressed in your safety gear to keep you safe while zipping! This process was easy and comfortable and didn't take up too much time. They also go over all of the safety instructions and everything you're going to need to know on your adventure. Next you do a little hands on training, you practice zipping along a line that isn't far off the ground, just so you get the hang of it.

Once the group has all had a chance to learn about zipping you move on the first zip line. The whole process is very safe as you are clipped in when you are up high. There are two guides with you, so one goes first to be waiting for the first person on the other side. They take turns on who goes first and it seems like everyone got that honor at least once, my time to go first was on the longest zip of the tour, about one hundred feet high and six hundred feet long. You can't have your camera or phone's during the tour but they do take photos of you one the last zip, that you can purchase.

The Canyons is right off I-75 in North Central Florida so it's very easy to access and not too far from the theme parks. You should probably reserve your tour ahead of time to avoid waiting. If you aren't brave enough to try the zip line fun then the horesback riding they offer might interest you. Either way The Canyons Zip Line and Canopy Tours is a super fun way to spend a couple of hours!
